John Stamper

I am a member of the research faculty at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. I am also the Technical Director of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center DataShop.

This website describes my research and development activities. Please take a look around and feel free to contact me for more information on anything you see.


I earned my PhD in Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My main area of research is focused on using "Big Data" from educational systems to improve learning. I generally publish in the areas of intelligent tutoring systems and educational data mining. I am also the lead researcher behind DataShop, which is the largest open repository of log data from learning systems. My PhD advisor was Dr. Tiffany Barnes. Prior to starting my PhD, I spent over ten years in the business world. Although I am still consulting, my most recent major position was Vice President of Development for VSI Technolgies, Inc. During this time I earned my MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator) certifications.


I am an avid collector of Arcade and Pinball machines. A somewhat outdated list of my collection of arcade games can be seen here. I am also a big fan of the obscure Vectrex game system that came out in 1982. This is a vector based game machine (like Asteroids or Tempest) that was released for home use. In addition to enjoying playing the games, I have created a few of my own games written entirely in Motorola 6809 Assembler language.

About this Site

This site is running on the open source learning management system called Moodle. This is a system that many Universities use for online classes and is similar in many ways to Blackboard. I was introduced to Moodle while helping a company transition their corporate training classes online. It works well as a project management tool for my research. The fact that everything is stored in a database makes maintenance much easier than a traditional web site. Would Drupal or other content management systems be better suited for this site? I have looked into them, but since I have some expertise in Moodle and expect that I will continue using learning management systems in academia, I think this implementation works!
